ALKEN, Henry. A Cockney's Shooting Season in Suffolk. Containing the remarkable adventures that actually occurred to a young Cit on a Visit to His Friends in that County. London: Thomas McLean, 1822.
2° (356 x 261mm). 6 hand-coloured aquatint plates. (Some spotting and light soiling to plate margins, some spotting to title and text.) Later 19th-century half calf, gilt-tooled spine with longitudinal green morocco label (joints lightly rubbed). Provenance: Stephen George Holland (armorial bookplate) – Cortlandt Field Bishop (bookplate; purchased in his 1938 sale, part 1, lot 55).
IMPRESSIVELY LARGE, SUPERBLY COLOURED SHOOTING PLATES, accompanied by a verse narrative. On a six-day shooting trip in idyllically rural Suffolk. Peter Pop, the son of a pawnbroker, and his friend and neighbour Sam Slop, prove a danger to the peace. Popping their guns in every direction except the right one, they hit men, women and dogs but never birds. On the last day a justice orders them to pay an enormous fine and never touch guns again. Final plate with 1821 watermark. A WIDE-MARGINED COPY. Abbey Life 384; Dixon 43; Mellon/Snelgrove 48; Schwerdt I, p. 12: 'pleasing book'; Siltzer p. 71; Tooley 22.
