Lot Essay

Charles Topino, maître in 1773.

Established in the rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine, Charles Topino specialised in the production of light furniture enriched with marquetry, either in the form of flowers or naive still-lives inspired by the borders of Chinese screens. He was most often employed as a specialist marqueteur by marchands such as Héricourt, Dautriche, Migeon, Denizot, Delorme, Tuart, Boudin and Moreau.
He is perhaps chiefly remembered for his naive marquetry of vases, urns and writing accessories and instruments, Topino is nevertheless recorded as having executed a significant number of occasional tables adorned with garlanded décors and floral sprays, as seen on this example. A gueridon with similar inlay by Charles Topino was sold anonymously at Christie's, Monaco, 15 June 1996, lot 91.
