Oval, 115 mm. high, rectangular giltwood frame
The inscription on the wood panel on the reverse of the frame is slightly rubbed but is transcribed in A. Stix, H. F. Füger, Vienna and Leipzig, 1925, p. 83 as ‘Retratto del Sig. D. Andrea Perula di anni 52 fatto da Mr Federico Ficher [sic] Pittore Tedesco, che fece i Ritratti die Sa Ma la Regina e sua famiglia e fece la stanza dello studio, della Regina nel Real palazzo i par mi si meritò somma lode e tal son a Vienna direttore di quell Accademia con uno soldo correspondente al suo meritò. Anno 1783.

Lot Essay

Füger went to Naples in 1782 where he painted the portrait of Empress Maria Theresa’s daughter, Maria Carolina and carried out some decoration for the royal palace of Caserta. In 1783 he returned via Rome to Vienna.
