The sitter distinguished himself as a man of letters. He stands high in Austrian literature as a national antiquarian, especially for his work History of the House of Habsburg.
A very similar, slightly larger version, was also sold Christie’s, London, 27 November 1985, lot 44, also from the collection of Prince Felix Michael Lichnowsky.
