Born in Fuzhou in 1940, Li Xubai is a lover of Chinese classics and worked as editor for art and collecting magazines The World of Collectors and Dragon Roots when he moved to Hong Kong in 1979. Li now lives in Canada and spends much time painting and travelling in various parts of China to gain inspiration for his artistic creations. Li Xubai is a rare example of a contemporary painter and a poet. He uses negative space to convey snow, streams, rivers, clouds, and mists, radiating a glowing light that contrasts sharply with the darker tones of mountains and vegetation. In the style of classical landscape painting, Li does not employ perspective; mountains flow in mid-air without revealing the peak or base. Li's landscapes are built of unconventional shapes, formed by jagged lines that twist and turn at abrupt angles. This exotic, geometric perception provides a strange, almost digital sense of modernity in his work.
