Born in Zhejiang in 1947, Ai Xuan graduated from the secondary school attached to Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1967, when his studies were interrupted by the Cultural Revolution. He often visited Tibet; his highly skilled and realistic paintings of Tibetan culture and figures achieved national and international acclaim in the 1980s. A founding member of the Chinese School of Realism in the socialist realist vein, he currently teaches at the Beijing Art Academy. Primarily known for his mastery of the oil on canvas medium, Ai has in recent years begun to experiment with ink and brush painting, applying European watercolour techniques of shading, hues and lines to portray close-up figures situated in vast landscapes, creating new, striking imageries.
