The present lot bears the engraved crest of the Dukes of Norfolk and was probably supplied to either Thomas Howard, 8th Duke of Norfolk (1683-1732) or Edward Howard, 9th Duke of Norfolk (1685-1777).

拍品專文

The only larger equinoctial ring dials recorded are 15 and 18 inches. It has been suggested that due to their weight, size and hence accuracy (here to 20 seconds of arc), that they were intended for use at sea. We note that Scott was compass maker to the Russian Navy 1733-47, and maker to the St. Petersburg Academy
