KING, Daniel (c.1616-c.1661). The Vale-Royall of England. Or, the County Palatine of Chester Illustrated. London: John Streater, 1656. Small 2° (281 x 179mm). Additional engraved title, three double–page maps and plans, 16 engraved plates, including two folding and 11 plates of coats-of-arms, illustrations, most by Hollar. (Some marginal repairs, including very neatly extended margins in the engraved title and M1.) 19th-century dark blue morocco, spine lettered directly in gilt and gilt in compartments, sides panelled in gilt, gilt turn-ins and edges (corners lightly rubbed). Provenance: W.E. Moss (his sale, Sotheby’s, 2 March 1937; Hobson’s manuscript note recording the purchase).
FIRST EDITION. COMPLETE WITH ALL THE ETCHINGS, most of these by Wenceslas Hollar; these are unsigned and are sometimes wrongly attributed to King himself. The Vale-Royall also includes – printed for the first time – two essays on Chester by William Smith and William Web. Wing K488; Upcott I, 61-63.
