BIGOT, Louis-Emery (1626-1689) – Gabriel MARTIN (1679-1761). Biblioteca Bigotiana, seu catalogus librorum:. Paris: Jean Boudot, Charles Osmont and Gabriel Martin, 1st July 1706. 5 parts in one volume, 8° (161 x 96mm). (Faint dampstain in the first and last few gatherings.) Contemporary calf, spine gilt, red morocco label, edges red (label mostly lost, spine ends chipped). Provenance: Poerier d’Amfreville (title signature); some early marginalia.
FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST PARIS BOOK AUCTION CATALOGUE (Pollard & Ehrman). It is the first of the 148 catalogues compiled by Gabriel Martin which, over the course of 25 years, helped establish Paris as the leading centre for book auctions. Martin employed a novel bibliographical system, grouping books according to sizes, and then according to subjects. This ground-breaking catalogue lists two of the foremost French seventeenth-century libraries. The Bigot family library was greatly enhanced by the phenomenal spending of Émery Bigot (1626-1689); at his death the library contained more than 6000 books and manuscripts. The library was bought en bloc by the booksellers Boudot, Osmont and Martin, who at the same time had acquired the de Mesmes family library, founded by Jean-Jacques de Mesmes (1490-1569). The two collections are offered here together in nearly 16,500 lots. The 450 lots of Bigot manuscripts, were bought for the Bibliothèque Royale. Blichet, p. 69; Pollard & Ehrman, p.237 (incorrect, as Ehrman did not own a copy of the catalogue); North 12; not in Blogie.
