This painting is by the same artist as lots 55 and 56 in this sale. Three subsequent episodes appear in the present painting. On the left, Kamsa is shown being awaken by his ministers as the news of the birth of Devaki and Vasudeva’s child has come to them. On the right, Kamsa seizes the baby child who escapes his grasp. Devaki and Vasudeva’s true child, Balarama, had been substituted with Yogmaya (a form of Durga) whilst still in Devaki’s womb. It is Yogmaya that appears in her eight-armed form in the sky and warns Kamsa of his prophecy – that he shall be killed by Devaki and Vasudeva’s eight child.
