At the moment of the birth of Krishna, Devaki and Vasudeva’s eight child, the guards of their dungeon in Mathura fell asleep. Vasudeva escaped the city and brought baby Krishna to Nanda in the village of Gokul across the river Yamuna. Whilst the storm is raging at night, the serpent Shesh-naga protects Vasudeva and Krishna as they cross the river.
