Lot Essay

The design of the chair back with its tablet rail and flower-filled guilloche, curved arms and herm legs, relates to T. Sheraton's The Cabinet Dictionary, London, 1803, pl. 7, no. 2. Identical flower sprays within foliate borders on the legs and stretchers feature on a chair sold by Lord Astor of Hever Castle in Christie's, London, 13 February, 1975, lot 38. It also appears on five more from the set which were in the Wrightsman Collection and were sold by Mrs. Charles Wrightsman, Sotheby's New York, 5 May 1984, lot 183 (F.J.B. Watson, The Wrightsman Collection Catalogue III, 1970, no. 290 A-E).

The inset mirrors on the back rest of the armchair are unusual although another chair from this set was offered at Christie's, London, 6 July 2000, lot 15. For other fine examples of ivory furniture from Vizagapatam, see Amin Jaffer, Furniture from British India and Ceylon, Singapore, 2001, pp.172-221.
