Opaque pigments heightened with gold on paper, the ruler of Udaipur depicted seated in a howdah, haloed and in full regalia, a mahout and attendant at the front and back, his mace and standard bearers preceding the royal elephant, the attendants and servants with parasols, ladder and shield following, the procession escorted by foot soldiers, on green ground, in blue borders in black and white rules, with wide red margins, signed in white devanagari script in the lower right corner

The signature along the bottom edge is that of Pannalal Parasram Gaur (1860-1935). Pannalal very much headed the royal painting workshop under Maharana Fateh Singh (1849-1929), and still held this position in 1935 when Bhupal Singh (1884-1955), his adopted son, summoned the artists to the palace in Udaipur, where Pannalal oversaw the overall design programme of the Raj Mahal (The Art of Realism Painted photographs from India, in Rahaab Allana, Painted Photographs: Coloured Portraiture in India, The Alkazi Collection of Photography and Mapin, SOAS, 2008).
