Lot Essay
Liu Dao is a Shanghai-based art collective of multi-disciplinary talents driven by innovation and interaction. Their works are based on the idea of partnership and are always the result of this collaborative process. Their media - ranging from LED, interactive art, neon art, photography to sculpture -transcend boundaries. The use of modern technology allows them to create cutting edge works. Their aesthetics engage sights and scenes from old and new China as illustrated in both works presented here. Blurry Blue with You (Lot 109) quotes a blue and white porcelain vase, a highly iconic reference involving the traditional symbol of butterflies. However, the rendering of LED art inaugurates a sense of novelty. Chinese Laundry (Lot 111) depicts a girl walking on a single line clothes dryer. The humorous part lies in the character walking on a drying line while trying to shelter her under an umbrella. The two pieces are open to interpretation whilst the execution remains original and striking.
