In 1913 Beekman went to Paris were he was inspired by the work of Georges Seurat. After his return in 1914, Beekman focussed on the city of The Hague in his work, where he resided at the time. He documented many streets that were still under construction. It has been suggested that the present lot depicts the Ieplaan, The Hague. In 1914 Beekman made a lithograph with a similar subject, titled Zonsopgang, now in the Kröller-Müller museum in Otterlo.
