A CARVED POLYCHROME LACQUER 'LOTUS LEAF' BOX AND COVER
QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-1795)
The box and cover are carved with a shape conforming to the decoration on the top of the cover - an open lotus leaf with upturned edges partially covering a lotus pod and another smaller downturned leaf. The sides are lacquered in cinnabar red and finely detailed with a diaper pattern, while the interior and the base are lacquered black with a later incised four-character Qianlong mark on the base.
5 3/4 in. (14.8 cm.) wide

Similar polychrome boxes are in the Qing Court collection. Compare one box carved with the same subject but in a more stylised fashion in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, illustrated in Carving the Subtle Radiance of Colours: Treasured Lacquerware in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, 2008, p. 168, no. 187.
