LATE MING - EARLY QING DYNASTY, 17TH CENTURY
The brushpot is of cylindrical shape carved in medium relief as a deep magnolia flower with overlapping petals and surrounded by blossoming branches and ruyi emerging from rocks around the base. The wood is of a rich caramel and honey tone.
8 3/4 in. (22.3 cm.) diam.

The composition of the relief carving seen on this brush pot, is very similar to a zitan brush pot in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Bamboo, Wood, Ivory and Rhinoceros Horn Carvings, Hong Kong, 2002, p. 24, no.23.
