Lot Essay

Michael Wagmüller was Court Sculptor to Ludwig II working at Herrenchiemsee and Linderhof. The model appears to be based on a bronze equestrian group attributed to Guillaume de Groff (1680-1742) who produced a series of statuettes of monarchs including William III at Windsor castle and Charles XII of Sweden.
