AN APULIAN RED-FIGURED RHYTON
CIRCA 340-320 B.C.
Molded in the form of a goat head with naturalistic features, the slender tapering snout with curving nostrils and a straight mouth, with convex almond-shaped eyes, raised tufts of fur encircling below, running down the sides of the face and onto the top of the head, peaking in the center, with two short outward-curving horns and projecting piriform ears; the bowl with a female head in profile to the left, wearing a necklace, an earring and a radiate stephane, scrolling tendrils on either side of the strap handle, short vertical lines below and on the rim, details in painted red, white and orange
