Lot Essay

The recipient of this painting is Kayama Matazo (1927-2004), a Japanese artist who fused different types of art schools into his works. Having graduated from the Kyoto Prefectural School of Art and Crafts in 1949, he was a teaching professor at the Tokyo University of the Arts from 1989. In 2003 he was awarded the Japanese Order of Culture, and is recognized as one of the leading innovators of Japanese Contemporary art. Having visited China several times, he was invited to speak at the China Central Academy Of Fine Arts in 1983 and 1987, and a professor emeritus was awarded to him in 1990.
