The Brazilian designer Hugo França only works with naturally felled or burned trees and manipulates as little as possible to produce a functional object while maintaining the integrity of the material. The present example was carved from a canoe used many years ago by the Pataxós Indians, located on the Brazilian Discovery Coast. The canoe, a handmade object that preserves the tree's original features, served as inspiration to create furniture with limited manmade intervention. He particularly enjoyed working with Pequi wood that is virtually indestructible and can reach an age of more than one thousand years and heights of at least forty meters.
