GOYA y Lucientes, Francisco Jose de (1746-1828). [Caprichos de Goya. Coleccion de Ochenta Estampas . Madrid: Calografia Nacional, 1868.]
2o (311 x 223 mm). 80 etchings with burnished aquatint, drypoint and engraving, one titled in the image, the others with integral engraved titles beneath. (Some scattered mostly marginal foxing, plate 12 with marginal crease.) Original printed yellow boards (rebacked and corners renewed in vellum).
Third Edition, first issued by the artist in 1799, many specific themes and allusions - satirical or not - in Goya's caprices, generally considered his finest work, have defied interpretation other than that they relate to society's follies. Plate 43 intended as the frontispiece of this suite: “The sleep of reason produces monsters” is among the most important visual statements of the Age of Enlightenment. “This edition is well printed and the impressions are still generally good” (Harris). RARE: according to American Book Price Current, only one other copy of this edition has sold in at least 30 years. Delteil 38-117; Harris I, pp. 7, 10, 62-63, 95-133, and II, pp. 62-158 and nos. 36-115. Fact and Fantasy 68.
