8°. Half-title. Red cloth, gilt spine, dustjacket; clamshell box.

LATER EDITION, SIGNED AND INSCRIBED ON THE HALF-TITLE: “To J. O. Thresher from Winston S. Churchill / Mamund Valley 1897 / 1951.” An interesting association to Churchill's early military adventures, as he inscribes this collection of his newspaper essays that “touch on the lighter side of grave affairs,” to a fellow survival of Sir Blindon Blood’s punitive expedition to the Pashtun region on the Northwest Frontier, an episode memorialized in Churchill’s very first book, The Story of the Malakand Field Force. [With:] J. O. Thresher’s medal from the Punjab campaign; an engraved silver snuffbox presented to Thresher, 1916; Thresher’s Army account book; and assorted newspaper clippings.
