PRESENTATION COPY FROM A FORMER PRESIDENT, inscribed by John Tyler in upper margin of wrapper: “Hon. Caleb Cushing with the salutations of the Author.” Caleb Cushing, an influential Massachusetts Congressman, served as Attorney General in Franklin Pierce’s cabinet, and as ambassador to China (negotiating the 1844 Treaty of Wang Hiya). Tyler is one of the rarest 19th century presidents in the form of signed book.
