The composition derives from the figure to the extreme right in the lost Riding School (formerly in the Kaiser-Friedrich-Museum, Berlin), which was probably a workshop copy of Rubens’ original of circa 1615. Comparable to the present lot is A rider in the Liechtenstein Collection, Vaduz, which has been attributed to Van Dyck (see: E. Larsen, The paintings of Anthony van Dyck, Freren, 1988, II, p. 298, no 752, ill.).
