Petter was considered a highly skilled flower and fruit still life painter during the Biedermeierzeit in Vienna. A refined naturalness, a realistic sentimentality and an eye for great detail was a typical characteristic of the Biedermeierzeit and thus also present in flower painting. In 1813, only 22 years old, Petter painted the present lots. A year later he was assigned the function as Korrektor at the Blumenzeichenschule and in 1832 he became professor at the Manufaktorzeichenschule. Petter's style was different than his precursors or competitors, in the sense that he composed his floral bouquets in a more natural and delicate fashion.
