THIS REPORT HAS BEEN PREPARED BY HAMISH DEWAR, HAMISH DEWAR LTD
Structural Condition
The artist's panel is providing an even and stable structural support. The reverse of the panel
appears to have a coating of a resin-like substance.
Paint surface
The paint surface has a relatively even but slightly cloudy varnish layer and there is evidence of
surface dirt.
There is a small diagonal abrasion in the lower left corner of the composition.
Inspection under ultra-violet light shows a discoloured varnish layer.
Inspection under ultra-violet light also shows scattered retouchings, including:
1) horizontal lines of retouching throughout the sky,
2) small spots and lines of retouching around the lion in the far right of the composition and a
thin horizontal line of retouching running in from the centre of the right edge,
3) small spots and lines on the black horse in the lower centre of the composition,
4) an intermittent vertical line of retouching running up the left edge, and
5) a line of strengthening on the trunk of the tree in the centre of the composition and some
further spots and lines within the foliage.
Summary
The painting would therefore appear to be in good and stable condition and could benefit
from cleaning, restoration and revarnishing.
