The present Virgin Lactans is comparable to the work of Jean Soulas on the monumental choir screen at Chatres Cathedral, in his depictions of the Nativity and the Adoration of the Magi, carved in the 1520s.

Gustav Schutz (1865-1939) was a successful sculptor and a major patron of the arts. Schutz formed an important collection of Gothic sculpture, which was published by Frans Kieslinger in 1937. He bequeathed parts of his collection to the Kunsthistorisches Museum, the Academy of Fine Arts and the Folklore Museum, all in Vienna, in 1932.
