THE FOOL WITH CLUB AND BALL, historiated initial ‘D’ on a leaf from the ST ALBANS BIBLE, in Latin, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM [Paris, c.1320-40].

294 x 198mm. The historiated initial ‘D’ with the bare-bottomed Fool holding a club and ball opening Psalm 52, ‘Dixit insipiens’, the text starting in Psalm 51:4 and ending in 57:7, 46 lines written in a gothic hand in brown ink, headings in red, versal initials alternately of blue and gold, five small illuminated initials extending into the borders, on the recto a tusked boar and a seated lion (edges lightly worn). Provenance: (1) the present leaf is from the St Albans Bible, illuminated in Paris c.1320-40, so-called because the parent codex, with later 16th-century binding, contained flyleaves from a register of St Albans Abbey (similar to Bodleian Library, MS Douce 299, also from St Albans). Michael of Mentmore, abbot of St Albans from 1335-49, purchased, according to the Abbey chronicle, ‘duas bonas biblias’: perhaps the St Albans Bible was one of them. (2) The intact parent manuscript sold at Sotheby’s, 6 July 1964, lot 239. (3) Sotheby’s, 21 June 1994, lot 17; bought from Duschnes, cat. 169 (1964), no 16.

A PLAYFUL EXAMPLE OF THE FINEST FOURTEENTH-CENTURY FRENCH ILLUMINATION FROM AN IMPRESSIVE PARISIAN BIBLE. The style of illumination is that of the workshop of Jean Pucelle (c.1300-1355), one of the most influential, prolific, and innovative artists of the first half of the 14th century, responsible for such monuments of French illumination as the Belleville Breviary, the Hours of Jeanne d’Evreux and the Billyng Bible. Though not as refined as Pucelle’s own work, the sculptural treatment of the semi-grisaille figure of the Fool in the present miniature, and the expressiveness of his features show the influence of the great master.
