(Some soiling on first and final leaf.) 19th-century morocco with gilt arms of François Florentine Achille, baron Seillière [Olivier 1130], elaborate gilt borders, gilt spine, inlays and edges (extremities lightly rubbed, corners bumped). Provenance: François Florentine Achille, baron Seillière (1813-1873) — John Gennadius (1844-1932; sold Sotheby's, 4 April 1895, lot 1942) — John Alfred Spranger, Trinity College Cambridge (bookplate and stamp on title) — erased ownership inscription on title and library stamp — Livio Ambrogio (bookplate).
EDITIO PRINCEPS of the Philostratean texts and Callistratus and second edition in Greek of Lucian's Dialogues. The two works entitled Icones by the Philostrati of Lemnos are purported descriptions of pictures in a Neapolitan collection, in whose imitation Callistratus wrote his descriptions of fourteen statues; they are of considerable importance for the study of classical art history.
