MAN RAY (1890-1976) and MARCEL DUCHAMP (1887-1968). New York Dada. [New York: 1921.]

2° (364 x 254mm). 8 un-numbered pages printed in blue. (Minor marginal soiling.) Original wrappers printed in red on cream stock (light wear at the extremities). Provenance: Man Ray (presentation inscription on the front wrapper to:) – Luciano Anselmino (art dealer).

FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED BY MAN RAY, with a pun, to Luciano Anselmino: ‘à Luciano Dadanselmino pas trop tard Man Ray 1973’. Anselmino was Man Ray’s primary agent in later life. This very rare collaboration between Duchamp and Man Ray, published from New York soon after Duchamp brought dada to American shores, was not sold or distributed conventionally, but presented to friends. The cover features Man Ray’s celebrated montage with the bottle of ‘Belle haleine’ eau de toilette and Duchamp dressed as Rrose Selavy – the first appearance of this alter ego. RARE: AE and RBH record just two copies at auction since records began, neither of them inscribed.
