SCHINKEL, Karl Friedrich (1781-1841). Sammlung architektonischer Entwürfe. Berlin: Ludwig Wilhelm Wittich, 1828 [-c.1835].
Oblong 2° (410 x 530mm). 24 letterpress text leaves corresponding to parts 1-24 (of 25). 147 engraved plates (of 174). (Occasional light spotting, occasional light creasing.) Contemporary half calf over yellow boards textured with small palmettes, flat spine gilt in compartments, green morocco label, edges green (corners worn, extremities rubbed). Provenance: Friedrich August II, King of Saxony (1797-1854; bookplate) – Dresden Central Art Library (stamps).
KING FRIEDRICH AUGUST II’S COPY OF THIS NEW EDITION OF ‘ONE OF THE GREATEST OF ALL ARCHITECTURAL FOLIOS’ (Avery’s Choice): the collected designs of ‘the most highly-regarded German architect of his generation' (RIBA). They include Schinkel's plans for his Schauspielhaus in Berlin, his chapel in the gardens of Peterhoff in St Petersburg, his pioneering Bauakademie in Berlin, and his designs for furniture, ornaments and handicraft objects. ‘As such, the volume is at one and the same time a pattern book and a textbook for exemplary building and design that was to be of considerable influence for future generations of architects' (Evers & Thoene). The Sammlung was first published in 28 parts between 1819 and 1840; it appears that Wittich issued this, perhaps the first collected edition around the time that the last part was issued. Complete copies of both this edition and the first edition in parts are almost unknown, most copies comprising a varying number of parts and plates. Evers & Thoene (eds), Architectural Theory from the Renaissance to the present, p.596; Placzek (ed.) Avery's Choice: Five centuries of great architectural books, 1997, no.320 (describing the 1841-1843 edition); cf. Berlin Kat. 2172; cf. RIBA 2934.
