NEWCASTLE, William Cavendish, Duke of (1592-1676). A General System of Horsemanship. London: J. Brindley, 1743.
2 volumes in one, 2° (540 x 365mm). Half-title, double-page engraved title in French [with the imprint of Jacques van Meurs, Antwerp: 1658], 42 double-page engraved plates and 20 mainly anatomical plates [12 printed in sepia], engraved vignettes and initials, woodcut illustrations. (Some spotting, mostly marginal but occasionally heavier and occasionally reaching into the plate; some plates lightly yellowed or with light offsetting; scattered ink spots in the top margins of index leaves in volume 1.) Contemporary red morocco, spine richly gilt in compartments, black morocco label lettered in gilt, sides with a scrolling foliate border (front board detached, spine lacking the numbering piece, spine ends chipped, the top spine compartment worn, lower joint starting, sides scuffed). Provenance: Hugh Lupus, 1st Duke of Westminster (bookplate).
FIRST AND ONLY EDITION IN ENGLISH. A tall copy, in red morocco, and ruled in red throughout. The Duke of Newcastle's equestrian skill was famous throughout Europe. Ben Jonson celebrated this skill in The Underwood (epigram LIII), and his riding school at Antwerp attracted students from all over the continent. His comprehensive book on horses and horsemanship, lavishly illustrated with engravings by Clouet, de Jode and Vorsterman after Van Diepenbeck, cost in excess of £1300, a fabulous sum at the time. The English Newcastle re-uses the copperplates of the original French edition published at Antwerp in 1658. Volume 2 consists of the first edition in English of Jean and Gaspard de Saunier's treatise of horse anatomy Parfaite connoissance des Chevaux. Dejager 146; Mennessier de la Lance II, p.250; Mellon/Podeschi 49; Nissen ZBI 849.
