2 volumes, 2° (630 x 475mm). 274 engravings, a number of these mounted, some 2-16 to a leaf, some in variant states and before letters, including the two title pages for L’Oeuvre d’Antoine Watteau, and including 8 double-page plates and some folding. (Occasional light wear, occasional light spotting and light soiling, some prints with manuscript caption in an early hand.) 19th-century half calf, red morocco labels (corners and edges worn, spine ends with losses, joints starting). Provenance: Hugh Lupus, 1st Duke of Westminster (1825-1899; bookplate).
An extensive collection of Watteau prints, including the title pages and a number of prints from Jullienne’s rare L’Oeuvre d’Antoine Watteau (c.1740). For the Jullienne edition cf. Cohen-De Ricci 1054-63 (’Ce somptueux recueil en deux volumes est un des livres les plus beaux et les plus rares du XVIIIe siecle. Des cent exemplaires qui furent tirés, à peine une trentaine existent encore aujourd'hui [in 1912!] les autres ayant été cassés par les marchands d'estampes’); Ray, French, p. 6 (‘an inexhaustible source for illustrators both in France and abroad who were working towards the new rococo style’).
