Lot Essay

Sachem was built in Boston in 1875 and condemned in 1903. Named after the chief of an Algonquin Indian tribe, this was reflected in her magnificent figurehead which depicted an American Indian holding a dagger in his right hand, with feathers in his hair and wearing a skirt made of leaves and a necklace made with the teeth of a bear.
