A pupil of William James M?ller (1812-1845), Johnson accompanied him to the Levant on the Lycian Expedition (1843-4). Later he travelled to southern Europe, northern Africa and Asia Minor. Primarily a watercolourist, he was also a close friend of David Cox (1783-1859) and went on sketching exhibitions with him to Wales.
