MARK OF JOHN DOWTHWAITE (MAKER'S MARK ONLY, STRUCK ONCE IN COVER, ONCE ON HANDLE AND TWICE ON BASE, NEWCASTLE, CIRCA 1670
Sides relief-chased with large flowers and scrolling acanthus leaves, the front with two putti supporting garlands of flowers, the cover centred by a Roman emperor to profile within floral surround, the bifurcated thumbpiece terminating in twin animal heads, the handle prick-dot engraved with initials W.B and terminating in a narrow escutcheon engraved with contemporary arms flanked by plumed mantling

Lot Essay

The arms are those of Blackett of Northumberland probably for William Blackett (circa 1657-1705), of Wallington, MP for Newcastle 1685-1705 and created Baronet on 23rd. January, 1685, the baronetcy becoming extinct on the death of his son in 1728
