Jean-Pierre Hoefer was established at 75, faubourg Saint-Antoine in 1838, and subsequently came to specialise in 'meubles de fantaisie' embellished with inlay of exotic woods, metals and other materials and with gilt-metal mounts, meriting the attention of the judges of numerous exhibitions, and winning a medal of the First Class at the Exposition Universelle of 1855. In 1868 his workshop was succeeded by E. Haby, who continued the work of his predecessor, specialising in 'meubles et sièges en tous genres, de meubles en bois de thuya et autres bois d'Afrique, avec incrustations dans les goûts les plus nouveaux d'art.'
