Lot Essay

A native of Hubei province, Tian Huan (1893-1982) was a painter and a calligrapher. He studied in Japan between 1912 and 1919, then returned to China and settled in Shanghai, where he became an official for the city government.

A native of Huzhou, Zhejiang province, Shen Maishi (1891-1986) was a painter and calligrapher who studied literature at Shanghai Aurora University. He started painting in his youth under his mother’s influence and kept art as a passion throughout his life. While working in the Chinese Foreign Ministry, he was a part-time professor at Peking University and authored books on Chinese paintings. His works have been exhibited both in China and abroad on a numerous occasions.

This lot consists of two paintings.
