Lot Essay

Ibn ‘Atiyya was born in Granada in AH 481/1088 AD. He later became a distinguished judge in Muria. The precise date of Ibn ‘Atiyya’s death is disputed, but it is thought to have been in the mid-twelfth century. Therefore the present manuscript is a very early copy of this work.

The present volume contains a commentary on the following suras: Qur'an XXXIX (sura al-zumar, part) and Qur'an XL (sura al-mu'min, part).

Two other copies dated to the 12th century AD (volume I) and to the 14th century AD (volume I) are in the Chester Beatty Library, Dublin, A.J. Arberry, A Handlist of the Arabic Manuscripts, Dublin, 1956 & 1959, volumes II and IV, p.97, no. 3475 and p. 63 , no. 3929 respectively. One copy (OR 4748), undated, 15th century AD, is in the British Library, London, see C. F. Baker (editor), Subject-Guide to the Arabic Manuscripts in the British Library, London, 2001, A.13, p. 15. See Brockelmann, GAL, i. 412, Suppl. i. 732

Other volumes from this Tafsir sold at Sotheby's, London, 6 October 2010, lot 26; 24 April 2013, lot 5; and at Christie's South Kensington, 24 April 2015, lot 253.
