Ibn 'Ata Allah was a mystic of the Shadhiliya order founded in 1258 and died in 1309. He studied with the direct follower of the founder of the order. His celebrated work of mystical aphorisms, the Kitab al-hikam aimed at arousing spiritual awareness in the disciple. Kitab al-Hikam was the subject of numerous commentaries, mostly from sufi scholars and the present work by Ibn 'Abbad al-Rundi is one of them. A sufi as well, Ibn 'Abbad was born in 1333 in Ronda near Malaga, Spain but spent most of his life in Merinid Morocco. He died in Fes in 1390.
