Comprising a Qur'an folio in eastern kufic script, with sura heading of Qur'an XVII (sura bani isra'il), 18ll. to the page, mounted; a folio from a fine Safavid Qur'an. with 13ll. of gold, blue and black muhaqqaq and naskh script, one illuminated medallion; a bifolio from an Indian Qur'an, each with 9ll. of bold naskh script; a large Safavid folio with illuminated headpiece from a story of Iskandar, reverse with 23ll. of nasta'liq script, mounted; a Qajar panel of 4ll. lines of fine black shikasteh script, laid down on brown card; a Qajar panel of 7ll. of bold black naskh script with a hadith of the Prophet, laid down on pink card; a Qajar panel of 4ll. of black naskh script, with illuminated headpiece, signed Zayn al-'Abidin al-Isfahani and dated 1268, on blue card; a panel of 5ll. of black naskh script on gold ground, signed Muhammad Rafi' al-Layali (?), dated 1354, on purple card; a panel of 5ll. of black naskh script written diagonally with sura al-nasr, signed Muhammad Qasim al-Mahjar (?), dated 1302, on blue card; a panel of 8ll. of black naskh script with Qur'anic verses, signed Muhammad Shafi' known as Reza, dated 1254, on pink card; a panel of 10ll. of black naskh script written diagonally, with a hadith of the Prophet, signed Hasan al-Khawansari, dated 1239, on blue card

Lot Essay

The following scribes have signed works in this group: Zayn al-'Abidin al-Isfahani, Muhammad Rafi' al-Layali (?), Muhammad Qasim al-Mahjar (?), Muhammad Shafi' known as Reza, Hasan al-Khawansari.

Zayn al-'Abidin al-Isfahani ashraf al-kuttab was a famed calligraphy master from Isfahan. He taught a number of fine Qajar scribes, including Zayn al-'Abidin al-Mahallati and Mirza Aga Jan Partau.
