Of rectangular form, the repoussé decoration with churches within floral roundels and sprays, the back with an elegant foliated quatrefoil, each panel within floral scrolling vine, the hinged raised lid with scrolling decoration, inscribed in Greek

Lot Essay

The Greek inscription on this silver box indicates that it was donated to the Church of the Virgin Mary in Andrianople (Edirne) by Dimitrakis, son of Papageorgiou in 1768. Edirne or Andrianople as it is known in Greek is located near the borders of modern Greece and Bulgaria. It was the capital of the Ottoman state before Constantinople.
