The Real Fabrica De La Granja was established in 1728 when Queen Isabella Farnese (1692-1766), wife of King Philip V of Spain, ordered a furnace to be built on the Royal estate at La Granja in order to supply mirror glass for the Bourbon court under the direction of the Catalan glass maker Buenaventura Sit. The distinctive wares produced were widely exported however the factory was not as successful as other Spanish royal works and by the 1830s, passed into private hands and subsequently closed in 1886.
