The thick, dark grey ink stone of irregular shape is carved through a milky russet outer layer on the top with lotus leaves that surround the recessed grinding surface. The underside is carved in grass script with a thirteen-character inscription indicating this ink stone belonged to Nalan Rongruo of the Yehe Nara clan.

Lot Essay

Nalan Rongruo (1655-1685), also known as Nalan Xingde, was the son of the General Secretary, Nalan Mingzhu, during Kangxi's reign. He belonged to the Plain Yellow Banner of the Eight Banners, and was a Manchu poet best known for his Chinese ci poems. The Yehe Nara clan mentioned in the inscription is the same clan to which Dowager Empress Cixi belonged.
