THREE BRONZE TRIPOD CENSERS
16TH-19TH CENTURY
The first is cast with bagua trigrams, symbolizing the eight natural phenomena, between two bands of auspicious emblems. A maker's mark, Yunjian Hu Wenming zhi (made by Hu Wenming of Yunjian), is inscribed in a gilded rectangular cartouche on the base. The second is raised on four short columnar feet, the censer is cast on the sides with four quatrefoil panels, each enclosing a different flower within a leafy scroll border. The third is raised on four ruyi-form feet, and two Buddhist lions resting their right paw on a brocade ball are cast on the rim. The base is cast with an apocryphal Xuande mark.
3 ½ in. (8.9 cm.) high; 4 ¾ in. (11.8 cm.) diam., wood cover; 5 ½ in. (14 cm.) diam.
