PROPERTY FROM THE ESTATE OF MICHAEL L. VERMEER, ATLANTA, GEORGIA Christie’s is honored to present the following selection of Chinese ceramics from the Estate of Michael L. Vermeer (1947-2015). In 1976, Michael L. Vermeer joined Alan Griggs (1939-1995) to form Vermeer & Griggs, opening a gallery in Los Angeles. Alan’s extensive knowledge of European antiques, Oriental carpets, and Asian art, specifically Chinese ceramics from the Shang to Yuan dynasties, was complemented by Michael’s strong interest in Ming and Qing imperial porcelain. In 1989, the firm started to deal exclusively in Asian art, specializing in their favored field of Chinese ceramics. When Alan became ill in 1991 the two closed the gallery. Following Alan’s passing in 1995, Michael continued the business and continued to develop his knowledge of Chinese porcelain. Michael sadly passed away in February 2015.

A similar vase in the Chang Foundation is illustrated by J. Spencer in Selected Chinese Ceramics from Han to Qing Dynasties, Taipei, 1990, pp. 162-63, no. 62, where it is described as being of mallow section. Two other similar vases, dated Yuan dynasty, are illustrated in the exhibition catalogue, Xin'an Haidi Wenwu (Cultural Relics from Sinan Seabed), National Museum of Korea, 1977, nos. 44 and 45.
