A RARE INSCRIBED PALE-GREEN JADE RUYI SCEPTER
QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-1795)
The tapering handle is carved with blossoming tree peony issuing from rockwork above the pierced, faceted end. The head is carved in the shape of a lingzhi, enclosing a gift inscription incorporating the signature of Shen Chu. The stone is of an even pale greenish tone.

A native of Zhejiang province, Shen Chu (1735-1799) was a member of the Hanlin academy and involved in compiling the Siku Quanshu (The Complete Library of the Four Treasures). He held several important posts during the Qianlong and Jiaqing periods, including the Deputy Minister of Rites and the Minister of Defense.
