Lot Essay

There appears to be only one other known example of this rare and unusual type of table, illustrated by N. Grindley and F. Hufnagel, Pure Form: Classical Chinese Furniture: Vok Collection, Munich, 2004, pl. 28. The legs, spandrels and `giant arm’ braces are of hexagonal form, which nicely compliment the faceted edge of the table top. The table exhibits the same elegant proportions and graceful splay of the legs commonly found in corner-leg tables. However, the recurring motif of the hexagon and facets suggests the ingenuity of the carpenter, who has been able to introduce original ideas to a standard form.
