Displaying remarkable second-coat paint, this Outside Stander was designed and executed by Daniel Müller (1872-1951), one of the most innovative American carousel carvers.
This horse appeared on the last carousel constructed by the Dentzel Company, which was erected at Rock Springs, West Virginia, in 1927 (fig 1). Its outside horses were repurposed Müller carvings from an earlier carousel constructed circa 1912 (Gray Tuttle, “The Last Three Dentzels,” Carousel News and Trader (January 2011), p. 20). Another Outside Stander from the 1927 machine is in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago.
